Gum disease (or periodontal disease) is a very common problem in Fresno CA, just as it nationwide. Symptoms don’t always include pain or irritation of the gums, which is why people either miss the problem or ignore it until it is too late.

Risk Factors

Gum disease risk increases due to a number of factors. These are the most common.

Aging: After age 30, you have a 50% chance of developing some form of gum disease. After 65, however, that risk increases to 70%.

Genetic Makeup: A family history of gum disease will raise your risk significantly, even if you are disciplined in your oral hygiene routine.

Tobacco: Tobacco is one of the most significant contributors to gum disease risk (not to mention other diseases and problems inside the oral cavity and beyond). If you smoke, we encourage you to quit to avoid not only gum disease, but the many known health issues that it can cause.

Diet: Obesity is a major risk factor. However, even if you aren’t overweight, you may want to reassess your diet, because you may be eating foods with low nutritional value. Being overweight or not getting enough nutrition both put considerable strain on the immune system, and you will have a harder time fighting the disease naturally.

Bruxism or Teeth Grinding: Bruxism affects many people. Teeth grinding, especially at night, wears down the teeth. Gum disease can worsen as a result, or increase your risk of developing gum disease.

Stress: Stress is known to have a negative impact on the immune system. Without a fully functioning immune system your body will not be able to fight gum disease (or any disease) as effectively as it should.

Medications: Certain medications can put you at risk for gum disease. Tell your dentist about all the medications you take, and work with him and your other healthcare providers to find a solution.

Illnesses: If you have diabetes, heart disease, or arthritis, your risk for developing gum disease is much higher, and when it occurs, it can be much more serious than in an otherwise healthy person. Discuss all known illnesses and ailments with your dentist.
